3 Must-Haves for Women in an MLM

Community, Collaboration, Role Models

When you decide to pick an MLM, you can find lots of advice on the internet.   There are endless discussions of your choices.

Money up front vs. back end money, consumable products vs. one time big ticket items, binary, breakaway, uni-level, vs. matrix commission structures.

The options fly around like little birds around our heads and each strategy is passionately defended by the people who use it.

But in all this advice, the options are presented as if men and women need the same things.

No one talks about how our lives as women affect our decisions to pick on MLM.

When you choose an MLM, you must take into account what makes you tick if you want a good match.

Community

A woman needs community.

From best girl friends to friends at work, a woman loves to bounce ideas off her women friends.

When you are starting your own business, the path can be lonely.  You can be typing alone on the computer late at night, wondering what the rest of the world is doing.

You can be considered slightly crazy to risk your time, money and energy on a project that many people think is doomed to failure.

You can struggle to balance your many roles, wife, daughter, mother, friend, colleague, and now entrepreneur.

Others may resent your energies going in a new direction.  They may “worry” for you (in a slightly unhelpful, slightly critical way) that you are being taken for a ride.

When a woman faces these challenges, she turns to her supportive community to get through the rough times.

One of the most important things that a MLM should have for women is a community where she can talk, process and find support.  She needs other women who have been through the same challenges are sympathetic to them, and have solutions.  She needs women who understand.

If the company you are considering does not have an active community that welcomes you and makes you feel comfortable, it is not a good fit.

Collaboration

A woman is wired very different from a man.

Men want to conquer.  They thrive on competition.  They love to feel proud of beating their friends.  When threatened, they arm themselves and get ready for battle.

Women want to nurture and collaborate.  They thrive on working with others.  They are proud when their friends succeed.  When they are threatened, they gather together and create a plan that benefits the group.

Studies have shown that this tendency starts from a very young age.  When a boy falls during a rough game, his peers leave him and keep going for the score.  Girls will often gather around the fallen child and help her up, and make sure she’s OK, even if they lose the score.

Women make fantastic entrepreneurs, but they need a different environment than men.  They need a place where collaboration is respected and supported.  They need to feel part of a big group who wants everyone to succeed.

The vast majority of MLM’s are built on competition—not just competition between different companies, but competition between downlines and even, competition within downlines.

Women need an MLM where she can work with any peer, regardless of their position in the structure of the company.

She needs an MLM where collaborative ventures are encouraged.

She needs an MLM where everyone is a star—not just the top diamonds.

If you find an MLM which does not want you to talk with your cross-line and which makes strong distinctions about who is in which structure, this is a warning sign that this company is not very collaborative.

Role Models

Have you ever noticed that you can be in an MLM where 80% of the members are women, but 80% of the presenters at convention are men?

Many MLM’s continue to use men as the role model for a star performer in their company.

But men do business differently than women.

These men often use aggressive sales techniques, can devote themselves to their company full time, and have the support of their wife raising their family.

Rarely does it woman have these benefits.

Of course, there are many 6 figure female earners in MLM’s.

But it is time for MLM companies to recognize that a woman’s business will often look different from a man’s.

Sometimes a woman can’t work full time so her company grows at a slower pace.

Many women don’t feel comfortable with aggressive sales techniques, so their company will grow slower as she waits for her leads to make their decision to join her.

And many times a woman must put her business on hold as she attends to her other family obligations.

When you choose an MLM, find a company that has women role models and actively supports a woman’s style business.  Make sure that you have many top ranking women as role models, and that they talk openly about the challenges of being mother and entrepreneur, wife and entrepreneur.  Find a company who has leaders who were NOT overnight sensations, but who grew through slow, quiet determination.
