Squiggles Make Great Marketing
Women Network in their Own Style
As women, we circulate the Get Well Soon Card to people at work and organize meals for the family that just had a baby. Women welcome the new family at church. We plan the spring festival for the PTA. At the end of a party, it’s the woman who knows which family has had a success and which couple is struggling.
All of these activities require these skills:
- Ability to see the needs of others.
- Ability to meet new people, find out what they need and welcome them in.
- Ability to organize.
- Ability to connect with large groups of people and form bonds that help get things done.
These skills are what marketers need.
- How do you find leads? Meet new people.
- How do turn leads into customers? Find out their needs and help them get it.
- How do you run a business? Organize a large group of people to build on their strengths.
No wonder multi-level marketing is so popular for women–it’s made for us!
So if MLM’s are perfectly suited to how a woman acts in the world, why are sales and marketing so uncomfortable for women?
The answer is that most MLM companies create an environment which is not woman-friendly. They don’t even know it.
Women Communicate in Squiggles
Have you ever been in a conversation with your girlfriends and noticed how it flowed? If you are all relaxed and casual, often it will randomly touch from one subject to another and then back again, each connection seemingly unrelated.
This communication style is what allows women to get to know each other and reveal their needs.
It makes them feel safe and heard.
But at training sessions, sales is taught in a very direct, sometimes confrontative way.
You are taught to “control” the conversation.
You are taught to lead the sales process from one step to another.
You are taught to ask very confrontative questions (the one I hate is: “What would it take to make you buy today?” No woman talks this way.)
So women attend these trainings and study hard and attempt to learn to not be the way they are.
But why?
Women make many buying decisions. They’re quite experienced at getting out the credit card and plunking it down.
A woman’s sales process needs to trust that a woman will decide to buy. She doesn’t need to be rushed or pushed or led or pitched.
A Woman needs an environment where she can get all her questions answered in a safe, open way.
Don’t learn to be linear just because your company’s training teaches that is how a sales process works. Find a sales process that allows you to talk in squiggles. Find a sales process that showcases what you already do.
The best MLM for women includes an innate understanding and acceptance that there is more than one way to a sale. It understands that a woman’s inherent skills of networking, supporting others, communicating and collaborating are what make a woman great for sales.
